Death toll from Nepal floods rises to 1,066, over 4,400 missing

Glacial floods in Nepal and China have claimed the lives of 1,066 individuals, leaving over 4,400 people still unaccounted for as the chance of finding survivors dwindles. As of the latest reports, Nepalese authorities have recovered 1,050 bodies, while 3,916 individuals remain missing. In contrast, China has reported 16 fatalities and 546 missing persons.

Rescue teams are persistently conducting search operations, with a particular focus on tunnels where approximately 100 hydropower workers are believed to be trapped. Assistance is being provided by rescue teams from China, India, and South Korea.

The relentless floods and landslides have wreaked havoc, obliterating entire villages and causing extensive damage to roads, bridges, and power stations. Consequently, Nepal now faces substantial challenges in the realms of relief efforts and reconstruction, with the estimated costs soaring towards billions of dollars. Scientists attribute the escalating frequency and intensity of such disasters to the accelerated melting of snow and ice in the Himalayas, a phenomenon directly linked to global warming.
