Colombia to Showcase Three Productions at the 2026 Venice International Film Festival

Three Colombian films will feature at the Venice International Film Festival from September 2 to 12. This marks a significant moment for Colombian cinema, which has been gaining global attention and recognition over the past ten years. The festival, one of the world's most prestigious events, will host three competing productions: a short film, Los poderes, and two feature films, El fin de los tiempos and Meteorito.

The short film Los poderes, directed by Salim Jaller, will premiere in the Orizzonti Corti section, the festival's international competition for short films. This Colombian-French co-production, produced by Sugarmind Films, Evidencia Films, and Alta Rocca Films, was chosen from over 2,500 submissions and will vie against twelve other international films. Set in black and white, the minimalist narrative and striking visuals distinguish it, marking Jaller's directorial debut after years of work in casting and actor coaching.

El fin de los tiempos, directed by Bibiana Rojas Gómez and Juan David Cardenas, is a feature film selected for the International Critics' Week (SIC). This section is known for introducing new voices in independent cinema. Blending fiction and documentary, the film explores memory and violence through a woman's journey revisiting a past marked by exploitation and violence across Latin America.

Its use of artificial intelligence to envision alternative realities adds a unique perspective on contemporary political and economic structures.

Meteorito, directed by Sebastián Múnera, is the second feature film by the director. This film will also compete in the International Critics' Week. The story follows two women involved in the illegal cell phone smuggling business into a prison, only to find themselves in an amusement park built on a former drug trafficker's estate. The film examines how everyday spaces still bear the scars of violence and the power structures that have shaped Colombia's recent history.

The 2026 Venice festival stands alongside Cannes and Berlin as a highly influential event, bringing together renowned filmmakers and emerging directors. Colombia's presence in multiple sections of this year's festival highlights the diversity of its contemporary film industry. While Los poderes focuses on an intimate visual language in its short format, El fin de los tiempos and Meteorito experiment with various storytelling techniques, from documentary and fiction to artificial intelligence.

In addition to the official screenings, Colombia will participate in co-production spaces and as a special guest nation, further cementing its growing influence on the global film stage.
