City University of Hong Kong disciplinary panel probes orientation camp after viral video

The City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has initiated a disciplinary investigation into an orientation camp activity after a viral video surfaced showing a shirtless male student carrying a female student in a bra. CityU shared in an email that it had established a disciplinary panel to meet with the camp's organizers. The investigation's severity will determine whether any disciplinary action is taken, in line with university policies.

The video, posted on Instagram under the caption "disco night," depicts a shirtless man lifting a woman wearing a bra as other attendees, wearing identical yellow t-shirts and holding glowsticks, cheer enthusiastically. The event took place during an orientation camp organized by the Management Sciences Society for freshmen before the start of the academic year on Tuesday.

CityU emphasized that student groups hosting orientation camps must adhere to a code of conduct and complete mandatory training, including an anti-sexual harassment workshop organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission. The university expressed deep concern over the "inappropriate behaviour" and "unnecessary disturbance" experienced by participating students, reiterating that conduct undermining student dignity will not be tolerated.
