China's Xi urges new Middle East security framework during Egypt visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Middle Eastern nations to resist external influence and consider restructuring the region's security framework during a visit to Egypt. This marks Xi's first trip to the Middle East in four years as Beijing seeks to increase its influence amid the US-Israeli conflict against Iran.

The visit comes as US partners in the region reevaluate their strategic relationships following months of conflict that disrupted trade, weakened economies, and questioned Washington's long-term role. Egypt, a major US defense ally funding around $1.3 billion annually in military aid, has been strengthening economic and military ties with China in recent years.

Xi welcomed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at Cairo International Airport, emphasized that regional countries should be "masters of their own destiny" and explore a new security architecture. China pledged to collaborate with regional nations to safeguard shipping routes, a critical concern following disruptions due to the conflict.

Both leaders agreed to enhance security cooperation, combat terrorism, expand cooperation in data centers, semiconductors, and critical metals supply chains, and strengthen using each other's currencies in trade and investment, according to a joint statement. Sisi highlighted Egypt's policy of "strategic balance" amidst global rivalry, seeking to broaden its relations with major powers, including China.

China views Egypt's regional influence and strategic location as crucial, aiming to deepen economic ties and reduce US influence. High-profile military exercises between the two nations, including rare air combat drills, underscore the growing military partnership. Egypt's strategic importance is evident through its role as a key market for China, importing $10 billion in Chinese goods in the first half of the year and hosting significant Chinese investments in infrastructure projects.
