CERN’s radiation protection training programme evolves to better support CERN activities

CERN's radiation protection training programme has undergone significant changes to better align with the organization's activities and modern learning practices. The Safety Training Service, in collaboration with HSE and specialists from other CERN departments, has revised the programme to ensure it remains relevant and effective.

The overhaul begins with the Safety at CERN induction training, which now incorporates key radiation protection messages for all personnel working on CERN's sites. The outdated Radiation Protection – Awareness e-learning course has been removed, making way for streamlined updates to the Radiation Protection – Supervised Area and Controlled Area courses. These have been tailored to better reflect the specific content and framework of CERN, while also addressing operational needs.

A noteworthy change is the introduction of a new Radiation Protection – Radioactive Sources e-learning course, mandatory for personnel who handle radioactive sources. This course must be completed before requesting a radioactive source through GESO. To accommodate different learning styles, the Radiation Protection – Controlled Area – Initial course has transitioned to a blended-learning format, merging an e-learning module with a practical classroom session.

The revised programme is now accessible through CERN's Learning Hub under the Safety / Radiation Protection (RP) catalogue. As of July 1, 2026, all new radiation protection training assignments and renewals will adhere to this updated programme. Personnel with a valid qualification will retain their certification until its expiry date.

CERN's dedication to continuous improvement means that the programme will continue to evolve in response to developments in CERN's operational and safety requirements.
