CAN warns politicians against using Jesus’ name in campaigns

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has cautioned politicians against using the name of Jesus Christ for political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh issued this warning in response to a recent comment by Mama Pee, who invoked Jesus Christ in a political discussion about Peter Obi and the 2027 elections.

Okoh emphasized that while political discourse can be intense, Christians must be careful not to use Jesus' name as a political tool or to promote one candidate over another. He stressed that Jesus Christ should be regarded as sacred and not used as a weapon to compete against other politicians. Okoh urged all Nigerians, especially Christians, to exercise restraint when invoking Jesus' name in political debates, stating that the name of Jesus is reserved for God and should not be reduced to a mere political candidate or campaign slogan.

He reminded that Nigerians are free to support any candidate, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, or Bola Tinubu, and criticize them, but should not allow their political loyalty to diminish their respect for Christ.
