Business of Big Six: What Premier League big guns did during the transfer window

The Premier League saw clubs spend a record-breaking £3.528 billion on transfers during the summer window, surpassing the previous high of £3.14 billion set in the previous season. Only the English clubs outspent their European counterparts, with La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 spending a combined £2.44 billion. Historical English success in European competitions offers some reassurance, as English clubs have won nine of the 21 European titles awarded over the past eight seasons.

Arsenal, in particular, struggled to replace players they sold, while Chelsea acquired 11 new players aged 105 between them but must rebuild their youth system. Liverpool made few signings, focusing on French winger Bradley Barcola and Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. Manchester City, however, splashed the cash on two record-breaking deals, including £125 million for Enzo Fernandez, the highest transfer fee ever paid to a British club.

Manchester United focused on midfield renovations, adding three players for £148 million, but still faces challenges at left-back. Tottenham Hotspur made relatively few signings but remain at the bottom of the Premier League table.
