Berlin blames Russia for attempted drone attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his country's readiness to assist Germany after Berlin accused Russia of attempting a hybrid attack on Leipzig Airport, according to wire material. The drones were discovered on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport, with one crashing into a cargo plane and another reportedly carrying explosives meant to target a Ukrainian Airlines Antonov cargo plane.

German officials linked the drones to Russia by comparing their parts and configuration to those used in previous Kremlin-backed hybrid attacks. The German government officially accused a Russian intelligence service of attempting the drone attack on its territory, marking the first time Germany has directly blamed Russia for such an action.

Speaking to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz via phone, Zelensky stated that Ukraine is prepared to provide expertise, experience, or support in other areas where Germany might need it. The leaders also discussed the possibility of signing the Drone Deal, an agreement that has been under negotiation between the two nations. Russian officials denied involvement in the attack and accused Germany of escalating tensions.

Western officials have expressed concerns over a rise in suspected sabotage, arson, and cyberattacks, many of which have been traced back to Russian intelligence.
