Ayitey Powers takes ‘spiritual’ bath in sea after release (Watch)

Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, widely recognized as Ayitey Powers, has embarked on a spiritual cleansing ritual following his release from police detention. This custom occurred after he remained for nearly a week in connection with an alleged threat of murder against National Sports Authority (NSA) Chief Executive Officer, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The spiritual act, which transpired on Wednesday, is thought to be an integral part of his return to normalcy after his arrest and subsequent incarceration. Ayitey Powers was taken into custody by the Accra Regional Police Command on August 24, 2026, following his self-reporting to the police in response to a viral social media video.

He was then brought before the Dansoman Circuit Court, where he faced charges of death threat and was detained for a week. He was set to return to court on September 2 as inquiries persisted. Nevertheless, he was acquitted by the court when he appeared on the appointed date. The arrest was sparked by a call from the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for the police to investigate and prosecute him over the alleged remarks.

The committee also initiated disciplinary measures against the ex-boxer. The dispute was rooted in an ongoing disagreement between Ayitey Powers and officials over the cancellation of a boxing event he was promoting and the financial losses he alleged to have incurred as a consequence.
