Amnesty demands independent probe into alleged killing of Obodo in Rivers

Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing of Anthony Obodo by police in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The rights group stated that Obodo was allegedly shot on August 29 while driving a Lexus car along Agip by Ada-George Road. According to his family, Obodo was pursued and shot at close range by police officers.

After the shooting, Obodo was reportedly taken out of the vehicle, stripped of his jewelry, and left on the road in the rain before dying at the hospital. Amnesty emphasized the need for an investigation independent of the Nigeria Police Force, accusing police of targeting young men based on their appearance and possessions. The organization warned that lack of accountability fosters impunity and human rights violations, urging authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
