Allan Donald hails CSA’s expanded domestic structure as big step forward

Bowling coach Allan Donald has commended Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) expanded domestic structure, hailing the decision to widen competition across all formats as a significant step forward. The reform introduces key changes to the Pro20 Cup, featuring 15 domestic unions against an SA Emerging side in two groups of eight. This setup ensures genuine David vs. Goliath matchups, providing lower-tier players with unprecedented exposure to top-tier opposition.

Donald expressed his enthusiasm for scouting South African talent, noting that players from lower-tier teams like Border will now have the opportunity to face Division 1 teams, including giants. He emphasized that this exposure will offer players a taste of the first-class system and quality opposition, ultimately strengthening their skills.

Donald further praised the increase in the number of red-ball matches in the First-Class Series, which will see Division 1 teams play more games against top-tier opposition. He believes this will provide valuable experience for rising players as the Proteas continue to push for more red-ball action.

The cricket legend concluded by reiterating his belief in the importance of the Test format, stating that Test cricket remains the pinnacle of the sport. He stressed that the team must build strong foundational blocks to challenge higher-ranked teams and utilize the depth of their squad to navigate the expanded calendar, which is expected to be far more demanding than the previous season.
