All 21 passengers injured in Penang ferry-tanker collision sustain minor injuries

BUTTERWORTH: The 21 passengers injured in the collision between the Teluk Bahang ferry and the tanker MV Mekar Jaya have all sustained minor injuries, according to State Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi. Eleven victims were taken to Seberang Jaya Hospital by ambulance, while the remaining ten sought treatment at the hospital independently.

Of the ten who chose to go alone, only seven attended HSJ for treatment. In total, 18 patients were treated at the hospital's Emergency Department, all of whom experienced minor injuries and did not require hospital admission. The collision took place at around 8:40pm yesterday, with the ferry headed towards Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal and the tanker travelling from Air Dalam Jetty to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal.

Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin stated that the tanker was en route to Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, whereas the ferry was en route to Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal. The state has received a preliminary report on the incident, awaiting further findings from the investigation to determine the cause and additional details.

The state's Transport Committee chairman, Zairil Khir Johari, confirmed that the state has only received a preliminary report so far and is awaiting the investigation results. Several videos of the incident have circulated on social media, capturing injured passengers and overturned motorcycles inside the ferry following the collision. Despite the incident, ferry services remained operational and were not affected.
