Afenyo-Markin calls for swift arrests over deadly New Winneba violence

Minority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the police to swiftly investigate the deadly violence that took place in New Winneba and arrest those responsible. Three individuals were killed, and 15 others were injured when residents from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze allegedly entered New Winneba and attacked the local population.

On Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr Afenyo-Markin questioned how the attackers managed to enter the town in daylight while armed with firearms, machetes, and clubs. He directly addressed the divisional commander, urging them to be firm and maintain peace. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the police must identify and prosecute those behind the violence, given that the incident occurred during the day and not at night.

He also questioned the level of security intelligence available, particularly considering the presence of a police station in the area. The Minority Leader requested the Central Regional Police Command to collaborate with Police Headquarters to identify and apprehend both the organizers and participants in the attack. Afenyo-Markin called for investigations into the origin of the weapons used, including guns, machetes, and clubs.

He cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands and warned that failing to address the perpetrators decisively could lead to further violence in the region. Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that the immediate priority is to identify and prosecute those responsible while restoring peace and security in New Winneba and the surrounding communities.
