'AFCD won't label fighting dogs based on a glance'

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has refuted the assertion that its officers would label a dog as a fighting dog merely based on a cursory glance. In a statement, the department clarified that the identification of fighting dogs is conducted by veterinarians, who meticulously assess the dogs' physical attributes such as the shape of their head, ears and eyes, stature, height and body length, as well as body structures.

This method is deemed internationally accepted, scientifically sound, and professionally prudent, considering the actual safety risks associated with the dog, according to the department. The AFCD also emphasized that genetic testing is not the optimal method for identifying fighting dogs. The department explained that most dogs possess mixed-breed genes, and those with genes from fighting dog breeds may not necessarily exhibit the relevant characteristics.

However, the AFCD affirmed that authorities would stay abreast of technological advancements and consider the possibility of utilizing them as a supplementary tool in the future. The AFCD's objective in identifying fighting dogs is to ensure public and animal safety, and officers would maintain open communication with dog owners during enforcement operations.
