Abwehrkampf gegen Russland: Ukraine erhält bei EU-Treffen Zusagen für Luftverteidigung

During an EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Ireland, Ukraine received new commitments to bolster its air defense capabilities. Kaja Kallas, the EU's special representative for foreign affairs, expressed delight at hearing member states announce support for air defense. This request had been made for a long time, she noted. Kallas did not disclose which specific member states made the commitments, but assured them would be publicly announced.

What is important, for Ukraine, was hearing that progress was being made in air defense. A day prior, Kallas had stated at a defense ministers' meeting that some EU countries possessed interceptors whose operational period would soon end. These interceptors could be handed over to Ukraine to protect its population from Russian airstrikes.

Diplomats speculated that this likely referred to Greece, given that Ukraine had recently stated its need for around 300 interceptors. A prolonged shortage could become problematic, especially in the face of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure during winter.
