2027 polls won’t derail constitutional amendment, Senate assures

The Senate has reassured Nigerians that the ongoing constitutional amendment process will be finalized before the 10th National Assembly's term ends in June 2027. This assurance follows concerns that the amendment efforts may not be concluded before the 2027 general elections, potentially resulting in another failed attempt and a loss of funds.

Critics worry that the amendment process could face the same fate as previous unsuccessful attempts at restructuring the country as political activities and preparations for the 2027 elections escalate. However, Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, dismissed these fears, stating that the Senate is committed to completing the proposed amendments within the current Assembly's lifespan.

He also emphasized that the recently passed Electoral Act addresses issues related to the January 2027 general elections, ensuring it does not conflict with the expiration of the 10th National Assembly. The Senate leadership remains committed to advancing the constitutional amendment process as one of its key legislative priorities.
