This structural difference corresponded with epigenetic changes. Additionally, the researchers observed cross-coordination between the digestive and reproductive systems. If one organ in a system aged more rapidly, other organs in the same system were likely to show accelerated aging as well. This suggests a communication between these systems, possibly through hormones. Understanding these patterns could help prevent unnecessary invasive procedures.
