Wawrinka’s emotional US Open finale ends in defeat to Berrettini

Stan Wawrinka suffered a defeat to Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the US Open on Monday. The 41-year-old Swiss player competed in his final Grand Slam tournament before retiring at the end of the season. Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, fell 0-2 to Berrettini, 30, in a grueling match that saw the Swiss player fall behind early but make a comeback in the first set, forcing a tiebreak.

Berrettini, a former world No 6, held his nerve to win the tiebreak and move within a set of victory. The second set also went to Berrettini, who broke Wawrinka's serve and forced another tiebreak. In the third set, Berrettini broke Wawrinka's serve twice in rapid succession, sealing Wawrinka's defeat. Wawrinka, who had initially been left out of the singles field due to a lack of a wildcard, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play his final Grand Slam match in New York, where he had won the title 10 years ago.

Berrettini will face Argentine Mariano Navone in the second round after the Argentinian's upset victory over fourth seed Novak Djokovic in five sets on Sunday.
