US says it’s striking targets in Iran as hostilities flare again after month with no military action

The U.S. military has launched strikes against targets in Iran, reigniting hostilities after a month of relative peace. Central Command announced that the attacks were a response to recent attempts by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American service members stationed in the region.

On Sunday, U.S. forces targeted rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles at U.S. sites in Jordan, which were intercepted, while the United Arab Emirates reported intercepting an Iranian drone in its waters. President Donald Trump expressed a willingness to continue strikes, stating that more might be necessary to bring Iran to its knees.

He claimed that the U.S. and Israeli bombardment has left Iran "a failed nation," noting that much of its political leadership has been killed, its economy is suffering from inflation, and its military has been devastated. Despite this, Trump acknowledged that further strikes might be needed, adding that the U.S. would "see what happens."

The ongoing conflict, now in its sixth month, poses a significant threat to the region, as Iran has targeted U.S. military bases and infrastructure in Gulf nations throughout the war. Iranian state TV reported explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, though no further details were provided. This escalation in hostilities comes after the Trump administration intensified economic sanctions against Iran, aiming to bring the country to its breaking point.

However, diminishing U.S. stockpiles of advanced weapons, coupled with public discontent and potential political consequences for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections, have made the military hesitant to escalate the conflict further. Central Command emphasized that its recent strikes were narrowly focused on preventing the IRGC from placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which posed an immediate threat to civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and global commerce. The U.S. military maintained that the attacks were a direct response to Iranian aggression.
