US army secretary resigns amid signs of Pentagon unease with Iran war

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned amid growing concerns within the Pentagon about the administration's approach to the war on Iran, according to White House sources. The White House confirmed Driscoll's departure on Monday, citing reports of tensions between him and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Driscoll's resignation marks a significant development, as he had previously been hailed for his contributions to President Trump's agenda to "Make America Strong Again" at the Department of the Army. White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly praised Driscoll's effectiveness in advancing the administration's objectives.

The decision to resign comes amid growing unease at the Pentagon over the ongoing war with Iran. Senior leaders from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as four-star commanders overseeing operations in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, have warned Hegseth that prolonging major military operations would weaken the United States' capability to respond to other threats, according to the Washington Post.

Recent reports suggest that the war on Iran has strained the US military's capabilities. The Associated Press previously reported that the conflict has led to a critical shortage of advanced missile interceptors, particularly Patriots, which have been crucial in defending against Russian ballistic missiles during the Ukraine war.

Additionally, the US has reportedly exhausted its stockpile of sophisticated long-range missiles and is "virtually used up" of surface-to-surface weapons, including ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM), according to Reuters.
