US approves sale of military helicopters to Iraq for $800 million

The US State Department has given its green light for Iraq to acquire a $800 million package of military helicopters, equipment, and services. This contract, overseen by the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, includes Bell 412EPX utility helicopters, Bell 407M tactical and combat helicopters, along with GAU-19 three-barrel machine guns and M260 seven-tube rocket launchers.

Additional components consist of L-3 Wescam MX-15HDI electro-optical/infrared sensors, AN/AAR-60 Block 2 missile launch detection systems, high-frequency radios, spare parts, ground support equipment, technical data, and training for pilots and maintenance crews. This sale, according to the bureau, bolsters the security of a crucial ally and enhances Iraq's ability to counter present and future threats by improving rotary wing transport, reconnaissance, and air-to-surface targeting capabilities.

Bell Textron, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is the lead contractor for the deal. While the State Department has approved the potential sale, a contract has not yet been signed, and Congress has 30 days to review the arrangement. The Iraqi government has not yet commented on the proposed sale. This acquisition aligns with Iraq's ongoing efforts to modernize its military forces as the US-led anti-ISIS coalition prepares to withdraw by September 30.

Iraq has expressed willingness to sign security agreements with the United States and coalition members to bolster its military and intelligence capacities.
