UPI Transactions Hit Record 24.51 Billion In August, Festive Demand Drives Growth

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed a staggering 24.51 billion transactions in August, setting a new monthly record and reaching an all-time high. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) reported that the total transaction value reached ₹29.82 lakh crore, driven by increased festive activity such as Raksha Bandhan. The figures highlight the growing integration of UPI in daily financial transactions, catering to various payment needs from small peer-to-peer transfers to merchant payments.

UPI transaction volumes surged from 23.66 billion in July to 24.51 billion in August, with a similar 22% increase year-over-year from 19.63 billion in August 2023 to the current level. The value of transactions also saw a notable rise, growing by 20% to ₹29.82 lakh crore in August compared to ₹24.85 lakh crore in the same month last year. NPCI attributed this growth to the festive season's impact, particularly Raksha Bandhan, which led to a spike in everyday transactions and small-ticket gifting.

Experts predict that the upcoming festive season could further boost digital payments, emphasizing the expanding role of UPI in the economy. Deepak Chand Thakur, co-founder and CEO of Network People Services Technologies (NPST), highlighted the importance of new use cases like credit on UPI and continued investment in resilient infrastructure to maintain India's leadership in digital payments.

Additionally, UPI has expanded its global footprint, now accepted in 11 countries including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Greece.
