UK ex-PM Starmer to quit parliament, focus on 'international affairs'

Former UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation from his role as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras after an 11-year tenure. In a statement shared on X on September 1, 2026, Starmer revealed that he had spent the summer reflecting on his future and decided it was time to step away from the House of Commons. He expressed his desire to redirect his focus towards international affairs, particularly defence, security, trade, and technology.

The decision to leave his seat in the north London constituency will result in a by-election to be held upon the completion of the formal process of vacating his position. Starmer has represented Holborn and St Pancras since 2015, succeeding the late Labour MP Frank Dobson. He described his time in the constituency as an honor and privilege, stating that he and his family consider it their home.

Despite ending his career as an MP, Starmer emphasized that he would continue his work on violence against women and girls, an issue he has dedicated his efforts to for several decades. He highlighted several accomplishments during his time as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras, including affordable housing projects, education initiatives, and efforts to combat youth violence through the Camden Youth Safety Taskforce.

Starmer also acknowledged the support of his constituency Labour Party team and local staff throughout his parliamentary career, praising their contribution to his successes. He highlighted the achievements of his Labour administration in stabilizing the economy, rebuilding public services, increasing defence and security investment, reducing child poverty, and enhancing Britain's standing with international partners.

The Labour leader announced that the party would initiate a process to select a successor for the Holborn and St Pancras seat ahead of the upcoming by-election. He pledged his unwavering support for the Labour government, regardless of his departure from the position of an MP. Starmer assured that any candidate elected to represent the constituency would receive his full backing and assistance.
