TTD plans tech-enabled luggage tracking system for devotees
Under the proposed system, devotees’ baggage will be tagged at Alipiri and transported to Tirumala by designated vehicles before being stored at the Garuda Nagar Complex (GNC); movement of each bag will be digitally recorded and monitored throughout the process
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) is planning to implement a technology-driven luggage management system to enable real-time tracking of devotees' baggage, thereby reducing waiting times at collection counters. The proposal, reviewed by TTD Additional Executive Officer Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, involves using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.1 technology to track luggage from its acceptance at Alipiri to its collection by devotees at Tirumala.
BLE tags will be attached to each piece of luggage, allowing its location to be monitored throughout the journey. The system aims to handle up to 12,000 bags per day, with a peak capacity of nearly 1,800 bags per hour. Devotees can request their luggage through kiosks or a mobile application located within 100 meters of the Garuda Nagar Complex (GNC), and can collect their belongings directly from the counter.
A digital manifest and GPS-based monitoring will be in place for luggage vehicles transporting between Alipiri and GNC. Additionally, a central command-and-control system will be established to monitor luggage storage capacity, devotee movement, crowd levels, and service status in real time. Chowdary emphasized the importance of ensuring fast and convenient services while maintaining luggage security, and highlighted the need for adequate infrastructure, technology, and manpower coordination.
