Tsavo golf course to boost Kilifi sports tourism

Kilifi County is set to embark on a new phase of sports tourism and investment with the groundbreaking of the Tsavo Golf Course, a 200-hectare development in Makongeni village. The project, which combines golf with complementary recreational facilities, aims to create a thriving economic ecosystem that links sports, tourism, recreation, hospitality, and agriculture.

Speaking at the official groundbreaking ceremony, sports authority representative George Kithi hailed the project as a visionary investment that could transform the region's economic landscape. Kithi emphasized that the golf course should be viewed as a catalyst for broader infrastructure development, potentially attracting hotels, hospitality facilities, recreational centers, and other businesses.

The strategic location of the golf course, situated less than five kilometers from the Galana food-security project and close to Tsavo National Park, presents an opportunity to integrate sports, tourism, and agriculture into a comprehensive economic development model. Sports tourism is recognized as a crucial component of Kilifi's strategy to diversify its offerings, and the county government is actively working to create a favorable environment for investors to establish complementary businesses.

The Tsavo Golf Course project will feature a golf course, campsite, sports center, cultural center, tennis court, and other recreational amenities, enticing both local and international tourists. The development is strategically positioned to capitalize on the region's proximity to key tourist attractions, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a combination of wildlife, beach, and sports experiences.

The project's coordinator, Noni Bugus, highlighted the golf course's location as a significant advantage, with the facility situated approximately 15 minutes from Tsavo National Park and 45 minutes from the Kenyan coast. This positioning makes it an attractive destination for tourists and investors looking to combine various aspects of their vacation.

The Tsavo Golf Course Project Coordinator, Julius Kihara, revealed that the project was conceived during the Kilifi County Investment Conference, where stakeholders sought innovative ways to leverage the county's investment potential. The investors have collectively secured 800 hectares in partnership with local communities, paving the way for the creation of a larger sports and tourism city.

This integrated development is expected to attract a substantial number of visitors, extend their stay, and stimulate the local economy by creating demand for accommodation, transport, hospitality, entertainment, retail, and other support services.
