Trade Minister inspects site for Cape Coast garment factory

The government's initiative to bolster Ghana's garment and textile manufacturing sector took a significant stride forward with the inspection of a proposed garment factory site in Cape Coast, Central Region. The Trade Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, joined forces with Ministry officials for the inspection, in line with President John Dramani Mahama's commitment to establish factories in the Central, Eastern, and Bono Regions.

The proposed facility is integral to the government's industrialization and job creation strategy, with the garment and textile industry singled out as a key area for domestic production growth and youth employment. During the inspection on August 31, 2026, Ofosu-Adjare highlighted the site's strategic advantages, including its accessible location and proximity to road networks, which would facilitate worker commutes.

Community acceptance of the project was evident, with chiefs and residents actively involved in preparatory works like excavation. The Minister forecasted the site could be operational within one to two months, contingent on completing ongoing preparations.

Ofosu-Adjare praised the area's enthusiasm, emphasizing the potential for substantial employment and economic benefits. She cited the recently inaugurated Northshore Apparel Hub in Savelugu, set to create 3,000 jobs in its initial phase, with the prospect of 10,000 jobs upon full operation.

The Northshore facility exemplifies the government's 24-Hour Economy initiative, promoting increased production and employment through multiple shifts. The Minister affirmed that similar opportunities would be extended to other regions, noting that the establishment of government-backed industrial projects involves several stages, including feasibility studies and procurement processes. She assured the public that these necessary procedures were underway to facilitate the project's progress.
