Nvidia is set to launch DLSS 5, the next generation of their AI-enhanced graphics technology, on September 3rd with the release of NBA 2K27. The company provided performance data for the official implementation of DLSS 5 in the basketball game. At 4K resolution, the RTX 5080 and the flagship RTX 5090 were the only GPUs tested, both showing excellent results when ray tracing was enabled and the Ultra preset was used.
However, when the Multi Frame Generation feature was enabled in 6X mode, the results indicate a significantly lower render rate, around 39 FPS for the RTX 5080 and 62 FPS for the RTX 5090. At 1440p, the RTX 5090 could reach 594 FPS with DLSS 5 enabled while the RTX 5080 showed a render rate of 69 FPS. At 1080p, the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070 showed implied render rates of 133 FPS, 100 FPS, 88 FPS, and 64 FPS respectively, while the RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 had render rates of 54 FPS and 43 FPS respectively.
Nvidia did not provide an isolated comparison of DLSS 5 performance off against DLSS 5 performance on, but based on their figures, DLSS 5 appears to be a highly taxing feature.
