The Varnell Hill Show is stuck in permanent reruns

The Varnell Hill Show, originally conceived as a two-episode antagonist on Martin in 1993, has been revived in 2022 as a workplace comedy set in Studio 69. Host Varnell, portrayed by Tommy Davidson, remains fixated on his own longevity and struggles to adapt to a modern audience. Directed by Martin Lawrence and Bentley Kyle Evans, the series features an ensemble of comic actors including Kym Whitley and Kirk Franklin.

While the show attempts to explore the challenges of an aging talk show host in a network that seeks modernization, it falls flat in its attempt to strike a balance between nostalgia and contemporary relevance. The performances are largely wasted on poorly written scripts and a reliance on broad physicality and canned laughter.
