The book that convicted him: How Keffe D's memoir sealed the Tupac case

On Monday, Duane "Keffe D" Davis was convicted of first-degree murder for the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. The pivotal witness in this case was a book Davis published in 2019 titled "Compton Street Legend." The 228-page memoir detailed the night of September 7, 1996, when the fatal shots were fired from a Cadillac. Prosecutors built their case largely on this narrative, arguing that Davis's own account served as his confession. Without the book, prosecutors say, Davis likely would not have faced prosecution.

The memoir's significance stems from the fact that it provides an admission of guilt from the only surviving individual from the Cadillac that night. Tupac's nephew Orlando Anderson, who was alleged to have fired the shots, was killed in a separate incident in 1998, and the other occupants are deceased. The prosecution leveraged Davis's statements from a 2018 BET docuseries and multiple interviews, where he provided the same account of events.

Davis had previously given limited immunity to authorities in California to speak about the case, but this did not protect him from prosecution in Nevada. Consequently, he divulged details to them and included them in his book. His defense team argued that the memoir was exaggerated for financial gain and lacked independent corroboration.

However, Judge Carli Kierny allowed the book to be presented as evidence. The jury deliberated for less than three hours before convicing Davis, and he will be sentenced on October 13th, planning to appeal the verdict.
