Success of decentralisation must be measured by practical results – Veep

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized that Ghana's decentralisation programme should yield tangible outcomes that enhance the lives of citizens and promote local development. She cautioned against assessing the success of decentralisation solely on the basis of policies and structures established, but rather on the impact these policies have on public services, local economies, and citizens' welfare.

During a meeting chaired by her, the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation deliberated on the effectiveness of decentralisation and the measures required to enhance its implementation. Professor Opoku-Agyemang underscored the importance of public participation and education to ensure citizens comprehend the programme and its implications.

Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, Executive Secretary of the IMCC, highlighted the ongoing review of the programme's progress and the need for a coordinated approach among various institutions involved in decentralisation. The meeting also reviewed achievements under the decentralisation programme and identified areas needing further action to improve implementation.

This discussion took place in the wake of the Cabinet's approval of the new National Decentralisation Policy and Strategic Framework in May 2026, aimed at guiding Ghana's decentralisation efforts and providing a unified direction for local governance institutions.
