‘Strong numbers': PM Modi hails 7.8% GDP growth, hits out at ‘jhooth ki goonj’

New Delhi, India - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday celebrated India's 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter, acknowledging the nation's collective strength. The Prime Minister criticized those spreading "jhooth ki goonj" (lies and deception), stating that the latest figures demolished their pessimism about the Indian economy.

In a video, Modi congratulated citizens for the growth figures, stating that the performance was achieved despite a challenging global environment characterized by wars, supply chain disruptions, and economic uncertainty.

"Hearty congratulations to my fellow citizens. A growth rate of 7.8%—the nation is filled with joy. I congratulate the people of this country for their resolve and industrious spirit; this reflects our collective strength," Modi said.

Modi took aim at those spreading "jhooth ki goonj," asserting that the latest numbers had shattered the narrative of their despair about the Indian economy. He noted that India's robust growth was occurring amidst global crises, as the world had been unstable since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite these challenges, India's economy was advancing rapidly, outpacing expectations set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which had forecasted a 7% growth rate.

On the other hand, Modi observed, disheartened individuals were propagating lies and disappointment across the country. "Those who spread 'jhooth ki goonj' should recognize that India's growth is a testament to our collective resilience," he said.

Modi emphasized the need to maintain this upward trajectory and work towards greater self-reliance, expressing that "becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) is essential." He also encouraged citizens to adopt the principles of "Swadeshi" (self-sufficiency) and "Vocal for Local," urging them to support domestic products, thereby reducing spending on foreign goods.

Modi appealed for "Weddings in India," discouraging foreign travel for leisure or weddings, and advised against purchasing gold unless absolutely necessary.
