The Russian House in Berlin, a controversial institution, has been terminated following a treaty cancellation. This was announced by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) in Berlin. The Russian Cultural Institute, referred to as the Russian House, has been a source of contention for years. Standing seven stories tall at Friedrichstraße since 1984, it was once the largest Soviet foreign cultural institute.

Operated by Rossotrudnitschestwo, the state agency for cultural cooperation under Moscow's Foreign Ministry, the building houses exhibition rooms, a concert hall, a cinema, a bookstore, and a Russian Post branch. Its program includes commemorations of World War II, film screenings, and courses in Russian language, ballet, and drawing.

Recent assessments, however, have suggested the building may be used by Russian secret services for concealment, a claim echoed in the past. Politicians have called for the closure of the cultural center, which maintains it is solely a cultural institution. Green Bundestag deputy Robin Wagener found the French allegations plausible, noting that the institute is involved in more than harmless language courses and that it serves Moscow's "information warfare."
