Starbucks has discontinued a new blending powder for its Summer Blended Refreshers after complaints from baristas about particles becoming airborne and causing them to cough and fall ill. The powder, introduced last month, was meant to ensure consistent texture in the blended drinks. Baristas reported experiencing irritation of the nose and throat, with one Buffalo-based barista, Jasmine Leli, describing the residue as "like a cloud."

Starbucks stated that the product contained a small amount of food-grade silica, which is safe for use in food and their coffeehouses. However, the decision to use the product sparked controversy among union baristas, who reported health issues and concerns about the company's priorities. Starbucks has not announced any plans to bring the blending powder back to its stores.
