Sammy Gyamfi authorises lawyers to accept service of Afenyo-Markin’s defamation writ

Ghana Gold Board CEO Sammy Gyamfi has formally authorized his legal team to accept the service of a defamation writ filed against him by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. This followed Afenyo-Markin's announcement in Parliament on August 24, 2026, that he had initiated legal proceedings against Gyamfi for alleged defamatory statements. Afenyo-Markin had made claims of extortion against Gyamfi in his parliamentary remarks, which he subsequently detailed in a lawsuit filed in the Ghanaian courts.

According to legal documents filed with the High Court, Gyamfi's solicitors, Ayine & Partners, have officially instructed the court registrar to allow the law firm to receive the writ of summons and related court documents on Gyamfi's behalf. The notice, dated August 26, 2026, and addressed to the Registrar of the High Court, General Division in Accra, was signed by Seth Nyaaba, a partner at Ayine & Partners.

In this notice, the lawyers confirmed they had received explicit authorization from Gyamfi to accept the service of the writ and any subsequent court proceedings.

The acceptance of service is a critical procedural step in the legal dispute between Afenyo-Markin and Gyamfi, clearing a significant hurdle in the ongoing litigation. Afenyo-Markin, representing himself as the Minority Leader for Effutu constituency, denied the defamatory allegations against him and expressed his intention to pursue legal avenues to safeguard his reputation.

Meanwhile, Gyamfi's decision to authorize his lawyers to accept the writ does not imply any admission of guilt or wrongdoing on his part. Instead, it serves as a formal notification to the court that he is prepared to engage with the legal process through his legal representatives. Once the writ and accompanying court processes are officially served, the substantive legal proceedings will commence.
