Provincially regulated workplaces required to provide free menstrual products

Starting Tuesday, all provincially regulated workplaces in Manitoba are required to provide free menstrual products to their employees. The new regulations, which took effect on September 1, mandate that employers offer clean and hygienic tampons and pads at no cost, along with a covered disposal container near each toilet. If providing products in each toilet is not feasible, employers must ensure they are available in another accessible, private location at the workplace.

Employers can choose to offer one or multiple types and sizes of products, but at least one option of each is required. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business reported mixed reactions from its Manitoba members, with some expressing concerns about increased expenses and regulatory pressure. However, the president of the Manitoba Federation of Labour emphasized the importance of providing dignity and equity in the workplace, noting that the cost is minimal, estimated at $10 per year per employee.

Employers who fail to provide menstrual products risk fines of up to $5,000. The Manitoba government's decision to make this requirement applies to private sector employers marks a significant step in prioritizing women's health needs.
