Provencher Park eyed for new aquatic centre

Provencher Park in St. Boniface may soon become the location for a new aquatic center, according to a report that will be presented to the city’s community services committee on September 8. The report suggests that Provencher Park, which currently houses the free outdoor Provencher Pool, is the most feasible site for the development, with the lowest cost of development.

If approved, the existing pool would be closed to make way for the new facility, ensuring equitable access in an area with higher poverty. City staff has estimated the cost of the aquatic center to range from $18 million to $21 million, with capital funding approved for the 2025 and 2026 budgets, and an additional $2.2 million forecasted between 2027-31.

Provencher Park already has a Provencher Pool, and the closure of the existing pool could provide a swimming destination for the community for generations. However, some community members are hesitant to close the pool until a new facility is available, citing affordability concerns for families.
