Police deny tear-gassing pensioners in Lagos, say viral image AI-generated

The Lagos State Police Command has debunked claims that pensioners in Lagos were tear-gassed during a protest held on August 31, 2026, stating that a viral image circulating on social media is AI-generated. On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the police issued a statement clarifying that no tear gas was used during the demonstration, which saw approximately 500 pensioners gather.

The protesters, led by Comrade Michael Omishade and Comrade Agnes Funmi Sesse, held the peaceful rally at the Lagos State Governor's Office in Alausa, Ikeja, around 8:30 am. Security personnel, including members of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Taskforce, Eko Strike Force, and divisional headquarters, were present to ensure the safety of the protesters and the public.

After addressing the protesters, the NUP executives attended an indoor meeting at the Governor's Conference Hall, lasting about three hours before dispersing peacefully at 4:30 pm. The police emphasized that the area remained calm throughout the event and no incidents occurred. Concerned about the AI-generated image, the police urged caution when sharing information on social media, warning against the spread of unverified reports that could mislead the public, cause tension, or undermine trust in public institutions.
