Police arrest 34 after a fatal shooting in a rural Dutch village

In the early hours of a Dutch morning, a fatal shooting and two wounded police officers marked a grim gangland attack in the rural village of Overasselt, located about 85 miles southeast of Amsterdam. Detectives swiftly unleashed a massive 34-suspect manhunt following the incident. The victims included one individual who lost their life and two officers who sustained injuries but are recovering in hospital.

Dutch press reported that security camera footage revealed 30 masked individuals, many carrying weapons, walking down the street before fleeing the scene.

Mayor Joerie Minses described the village as "shaken last night by a form of extreme violence that is completely unacceptable." National police chief Janny Knol confirmed that officers from across the country were collaborating on the investigation and had already detained a "large number" of suspects. She termed the violence as "unprecedented."

However, prosecutors and police have not yet provided insights into potential motives behind the attack. The detained individuals were from various countries, including the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Algeria. Their identities remain undisclosed, along with the specifics of any charges they may face. The Netherlands, known for its role as a major hub for cocaine, also hosts the production of synthetic drugs, contributing to a growing violent underworld of criminal gangs.
