Police arrest 34 after a fatal shooting in a rural Dutch village

Police in the Netherlands have detained 34 individuals in a massive manhunt following a fatal shooting and two wounded police officers in the rural village of Overasselt, 135 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. The shooting, which occurred early Tuesday morning, involved around 30 masked men in a gangland attack, according to Dutch media.

Security footage from the incident shows the masked men walking down a street before fleeing the scene. Local residents were urged to remain indoors as police conducted their investigation. The two injured officers are currently recovering in the hospital, with their injuries not disclosed. Dutch National Police Chief Janny Knol described the violence as "unprecedented" and emphasized that officers from across the country were involved in the investigation.

Authorities have detained suspects from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Algeria, though their identities have not been made public. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, as prosecutors and police have declined to comment. Overasselt, like many Dutch villages, has been grappling with a growing criminal underworld fueled by the influx of cocaine and synthetic drugs, leading to increasingly violent gang activity.
