Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo will have season-ending surgery for a torn ACL

San Diego Padres' second baseman Luis Rengifo will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee to repair a torn ACL. This news was confirmed by the team on Monday after imaging revealed the full extent of the injury. Initially, Rengifo's knee pain was thought to be a result of a sprain. The injury occurred during a game against Tampa Bay on Saturday, when he attempted to throw toward home while making a play on the ball and subsequently fell to the infield.

Rengifo received assistance getting back to his feet before being transported to a medical cart. The traumatic event took place as two Tampa Bay players collided near third base, with Cedric Mullins heading for home. Rengifo was in the midst of chasing Taylor Walls when he executed the throw and suffered the injury. Rengifo began his professional career with the Milwaukee Brewers, but was released by the team on June 23.

During his brief stint with the Brewers, he played in 57 games and recorded a .205 batting average. In his time with the Padres, Rengifo appeared in 38 games and contributed a .292 batting average along with four home runs.
