Osun poll wake-up call for Northern voters – Mahdi Shehu

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has labeled the recent Osun State governorship election as a sobering reminder for Northern voters and other Nigerians who have, in his view, become complacent in their voting habits. In a post on X, Shehu emphasized that the election showcased the power of determined voters to withstand political pressure, despite the immense resources and influence wielded by incumbents.

He stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) entered the contest with a formidable advantage, capitalizing on its federal level presence and extensive human and material assets. "APC, its state, local and federal mights were not in Osun to lose elections but to prove their supremacy and take advantage of their incumbency at the federal level," Shehu wrote.

Shehu contended that the party left no stone unturned, yet voters remained steadfast in their choices, undeterred by inducements, intimidation, or last-minute empty promises. "They met a thick wall erected by voters who had defined what they wanted and nothing short of it, no matter the inducement, intimidation and afterthought last-minute empty promises," he explained.

He further suggested that if such determination had been exhibited by voters in parts of Northern Nigeria and the South-East, the election's outcome could have varied. Shehu noted that many Northern voters are typically swayed by emotions and immediate needs, contrasting them with the more calculated and discerning nature of Southern voters.

He called upon voters, especially those in the North, to learn from the Osun election and make future voting decisions that align with their long-term interests. "Hope Northern and other docile and timid voters will think, act, behave and vote wisely in their best interest," he urged.
