Ogun issues fresh food alert, urges residents in vulnerable areas to relocate

The Ogun State Government has issued a new flood alert ahead of the second half of the 2026 rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable areas to be cautious and move to safer locations if necessary. This warning comes after the Nigeria Meteorological Agency predicted heavy rainfall in Ogun State during the upcoming year. In a statement, the state's Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, highlighted that the first rainy season phase, which lasted from mid-March to July, caused intense rainfall and occasional flash floods, but the impacts were relatively minor due to government efforts.

These efforts included public awareness campaigns, routine maintenance of waterways and drainage systems, and improvements in waste management. The second phase of the rainy season is expected to begin in September, with Ogun State anticipating an average of 360mm of rainfall during that period, according to NiMet. Oresanya warned that prolonged rainfall could lead to river and coastal flooding, as well as overflow from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations, which might cause temporary oversaturation and increase the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.

Areas such as Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa, and coastal regions including Makun-Omi, Iwopin, Oni, Ifaara, and Igele are among those advised to remain vigilant and relocate if needed. Additionally, fish farmers operating in floodplains and river corridors, especially in Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase, and Ayegbami, are urged to harvest their stocks promptly to minimize potential losses.

Oresanya called on various stakeholders, including local government authorities and emergency response teams, to enhance flood-response activities and maintain regular monitoring of vulnerable locations. He emphasized the importance of public awareness and early action to minimize flooding's impact. The state government assured residents that they would continue to monitor weather forecasts and hydrological conditions in collaboration with relevant agencies, while urging everyone to take the advisory seriously and remain responsive to further updates.
