Number of ATMs declined by 0.5% to 2,272 in 2024 – BoG

In 2025, the number of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) owned by banks in Ghana decreased by 0.5% to 2,272, according to the Bank of Ghana's latest figures. This reduction occurred as some banks opted to decommission certain terminals to enhance operational efficiency. In contrast, the number of Point of Sale (POS) terminals increased significantly by 16.2% to 18,117 during the same period.

The 2025 Payment Systems Oversight Annual Report highlights that both ATMs and POS terminals continue to play a crucial role in facilitating electronic payment and funds transfer services in the country. However, the report also notes that the coverage of these devices remains relatively low when compared to other payment methods.

The report analyzed the usage data based on the adult population aged 15-64 years, revealing that there were only 10 ATMs and 80 POS devices available for every 100,000 adults in 2025. This compares to 10 ATMs and 71 POS devices per 100,000 adults in 2024. The modest increase in the availability of ATMs and POS terminals is primarily attributed to the growing preference for mobile money services within the payment ecosystem.
