No repeat of Wimbledon heroics as Fery exits US Open

British tennis player Arthur Fery's US Open debut concluded with a first-round loss to Italian seed Lorenzo Musetti in a hard-fought three-set match. The 24-year-old Fery, who previously reached the Wimbledon semi-finals, aimed to capitalize on his breakthrough performance at his home Grand Slam, propelling him from 114th to inside the top 40 rankings.

However, he was unfortunate to face Musetti, who, despite a career-threatening thigh injury, put an end to Fery's hopes of a resurgence. Musetti, who reached the quarter-finals last year, capitalized on Fery's mistakes, breaking twice in the third set and securing a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Fery, who had never advanced past the second round at a major tournament before this summer, appeared confident and focused, similar to his Wimbledon triumph, but Musetti proved a formidable opponent with his versatile game, particularly his one-handed backhand.

Despite a promising start, Fery gifted Musetti the first set with double faults and lost the second set after conceding the break point. In the third set, Fery mounted a brief comeback, breaking Musetti once, but ultimately failed to convert his chances. Musetti, aiming to set up a second-round match against Dane Sweeney, commended Fery's inventive play and the errors that contributed to his victory.

Fery's early exit marked the end of a promising year, but he remains optimistic about his future prospects, including a potential return to the top 200 rankings next year.
