NFF denies reports of FIFA sanctions over officials’ resignations

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has firmly rejected reports suggesting FIFA is preparing to impose sanctions on Nigeria due to recent resignations of key officials. Additionally, the federation dismissed an alleged letter purportedly from FIFA requesting an explanation for the mass resignations as a fabrication. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi tendered their resignations last week, paving the way for Emmanuel Ikpeme to assume the role of acting general secretary until the planned reforms are finalized.

Initial worries revolved around Nigeria potentially receiving a FIFA ban for purported rule violations. To address these concerns, a Nigerian delegation, headed by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), convened with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This delegation comprised NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, the acting NFF General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, and former NFF President Amaju Pinnick.

In a statement released on X, the NFF refuted the existence of a supposedly circulated "letter" purported to originate from FIFA, describing it as "totally fake." The federation emphasized ongoing dialogues with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA itself concerning a broader reform initiative for Nigerian football.

FIFA has reportedly accepted the resignations of former principal officers and members of the NFF Executive Committee, and the NSC, NFF administration, and CAF are in mutual engagement to chart a reform roadmap aligned with relevant rules and statutes. The NFF had intended to hold its elections this month; however, these polls have been postponed until the ongoing reforms conclude.
