NCIC summons MP Joseph Wainaina over remarks targeting those opposing Ruto

NAIROBI, Kenya - The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a summons for Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku to appear in connection with remarks he made about political positions for the Maasai community. Lenku is set to face the commission on September 17, 2026, to assist with ongoing investigations into his comments made on August 22 in Kajiado West Constituency.

The NCIC is probing the remarks under the National Cohesion and Integration Act, which addresses hate speech, negative ethnic sentiments, and actions that could destabilize inter-community relationships. Should the governor fail to appear, he could face an arrest warrant, criminal or contempt proceedings. Lenku allegedly suggested that political parties should not field non-Maasai candidates for positions traditionally held by the Maasai in Kajiado, Narok and surrounding areas.

He further stated that the Maasai had endured enough oppression and would no longer tolerate unfair political arrangements. The NCIC's mandate is to foster national unity and curb issues such as ethnic tensions, religious intolerance, and hate speech. The commission has warned that Lenku's failure to comply with the summons could result in legal consequences, including arrest.

The investigation unfolds as political figures increasingly strategize ahead of upcoming elections, with ethnic representation and control of political roles remaining contentious issues across various regions of Kenya.
