Mogotsi back in Joburg court to continue fourth bail bid

Brown Mogotsi, a political fixer, is set to return to Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for his fourth bid to secure bail. This follows the postponement of his fourth bail application last week, which was necessitated by the Department of Correctional Services needing time to compile and submit a detailed report regarding fresh allegations against him.

Among these allegations is a purported plan to escape from the court holding cells. Mogotsi is currently charged with defeating the ends of justice, stemming from accusations that he fabricated his own attempted assassination in November of the previous year. The state alleges that the plan to escape is detailed in an affidavit provided by the investigating officer.

Mogotsi's defense was taken aback by this new allegation, leading the court to request a report from the Correctional Services Department. The defense has countered with the assertion that the two new addresses provided by Mogotsi are new facts, providing the court with reassurance that he will attend the trial. However, the state has cast doubt on these addresses, claiming that Mogotsi has never previously mentioned them before.

An independent security analyst, Azaniah Mnisi, has commented on the second interim report, which was delivered to the Presidency on May 29, 2026. This report recommended further action against Lt-General Shadrack Sibiya, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, Mogotsi, and Witness G.
