Mogotsi back in court as alleged escape plot report looms

Brown Mogotsi, a political fixer, is set to return to Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for the next phase of his fourth bail application. The Department of Correctional Services is preparing to present a comprehensive report on an alleged escape plot involving Mogotsi while he was in custody. However, the court postponed proceedings to allow the department ample time to compile and submit the detailed report.

During earlier hearings, prosecutors claimed that Correctional Services personnel intercepted potentially incriminating evidence related to Mogotsi's escape plan and took swift action to thwart the alleged attempt. An affidavit filed by the investigating officer stated that he had been informed by a Correctional Services official about Mogotsi's intention to escape. The officer alleged that CS authorities then took measures to prevent the escape.

Mogotsi, 45, is currently facing multiple criminal charges related to an incident reported on November 3, 2025. According to the prosecution, Mogotsi claimed he was driving alone in Vosloorus when occupants of a bakkie chased and fired shots at his vehicle, forcing him to stop. He allegedly returned fire, discharging 11 rounds at his own vehicle, which led to the discovery of 11 spent cartridges.

Charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing justice, and perjury, Mogotsi remains in custody awaiting the continuation of his bail application.
