Milei announces a national address on Thursday over the Falklands claim

Argentine President Javier Milei has announced that he will deliver a national address on Thursday evening to discuss the sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands, following US President Donald Trump's recent comments on the matter. This announcement came after a cabinet meeting at Casa Rosada, where Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno presented an assessment of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Milei has described the issue as the "most important and sacred cause" for Argentines and claimed that recent events in Washington could benefit Argentina's position. He emphasized that Argentina is now seeking a reliable ally in the South Atlantic, alongside South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime area, with the goal of gaining control over these territories.

Milei also noted that China has historically supported Argentina's claim. However, these assertions do not align with official US statements; Trump simply mentioned that he "always reviews every position" without confirming any decision. The US ambassador in Buenos Aires, Peter Lamelas, stated in mid-August that Washington's neutrality towards the islands has not changed.

The State Department recognizes the existence of competing claims and acknowledges British administration of the islands, maintaining a neutral stance. British Chancellor John Healey confirmed that he has heard no suggestions from his US counterparts regarding the Falklands matter, reiterating the UK's unwavering commitment to maintaining the Falkland Islands as an overseas territory, which is supported by 99.8% of Falkland Islanders in a 2013 referendum.
