Migration: Spanien kündigt Millionenhilfe für Ceuta an

Sevilla, Madrid. Spain's government has approved a €309 million aid package for the African enclave of Ceuta, which has been overwhelmed by a mass influx of migrants. The funds are expected to flow within the year, Madrid's leftist government announced. The aid package, which benefits the enclave's 83,600 residents – smaller than Frankfurt Airport – represents 16% of Ceuta's GDP.

On July 30 and 31, approximately 72,000 migrants swam or scaled fences from Morocco to Ceuta, according to Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. Social media had previously spread misinformation claiming that those reaching the enclave by boat would not be returned to Morocco. Most migrants returned to Morocco within hours, and around 5,000, including 1,200 minors, were present in the area a month later.

Some locals have grown increasingly angry at the extended presence of so many migrants and have accused the government of abandoning the enclave. A few even resorted to violent confrontations with migrants. The Sanchez government is under intense pressure as a result. Demonstrations of solidarity for Ceuta's population are scheduled for this Wednesday, with further criticism of the government expected.

The enclave, which Spain has controlled for centuries along with the smaller Mediterranean enclave of Melilla, is also claimed by Morocco. The recently announced aid package includes funds for strengthening public services, security forces, migrant intake, and support for businesses and workers. Public services receive €21 million, security measures €90 million, and migrant intake and support €118 million.

An additional €80 million is earmarked to alleviate the local economy, self-employed individuals, and employees.
