Mental health order for teen charged over Tyrone murder

A judge has ordered a mental health assessment for a 16-year-old boy accused of murdering a 61-year-old man and attempting to murder his wife and eight-year-old daughter in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. The attack occurred in their home on Saturday morning, with the daughter surviving with severe injuries and her mother sustaining non-life-threatening wounds.

The girl is currently in a stable condition in hospital. The boy, whose identity is protected by legal reasons, made only a brief appearance in a youth court in Omagh to confirm his understanding of the charges, which include murder, two attempted murders, and threats to kill. Detective Sergeant Jane O'Connor confirmed the PSNI's connection of the boy to all four charges.

The boy's attorney expressed concerns about his mental health and requested the assessment. District Judge Conor Heaney granted the application and ordered the teenager to be held in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for 15 September via video link. The PSNI commended the first responders who provided crucial assistance to the young victim, stating their prompt actions significantly improved her chances of survival.
